Master Kunst und Theater im Sozialen, Ausstellungssituation

Arts in Community, M.A/M.F.A.

Specialisation in an interdisciplinary field

The Master's programme in Arts and Community (M.A./M.F.A.) at HKS Ottersberg has a profile that is unique in Germany. With its interdisciplinary orientation, it qualifies students for either a Master of Arts or Master of Fine Arts degree. The programme can be completed in one year of full-time studies or in two years of part-time studies and is organised in block weeks. The Master of Arts focuses on art therapy, art education or theatre pedagogy in social and clinical fields of practice. The Master of Fine Arts focuses on artistic research interventions in public and institutional spaces. Students are individually mentored by two teachers throughout their studies.

Project-based practical studies

At the heart of the programme is a project in which a socially relevant issue is explored from an artistic and scientific perspective. The project is independently planned by the students, and then carried out and evaluated. In this way, students develop their individual and socially innovative skills and expand their artistic and scientific profile. Accompanying seminars on scientific theory and research methods place the chosen issues in the context of the current scholarly environment. Central elements of the programme are project management, supervision and curation, which are supplemented by content tailored to specific target groups. Colloquiums and close mentoring ensure in-depth reflection and lively exchange within the peer group.

Both degrees enable graduates to innovatively implement and evaluate projects in various social practice fields. The Master of Arts qualifies graduates to work in psychosomatic clinics, child and youth welfare institutions, elderly and disabled care, the correctional system, theatres, schools and socio-cultural projects. It also qualifies graduates for further doctoral studies. The Master of Fine Arts trains students for the professional realisation of artistic projects, e.g. in public spaces, galleries, museums or in collaboration with businesses.
