Arts in Social Contexts. Social Work – full-time / dual (B.A.)

Shaping social change with creative methods

The Social Work specialisation in the programme Arts in Social Contexts is aimed at anyone who is enthusiastic about combining creative methods and social support. If you want to work with people in difficult life situations and use artistic forms of expression as a medium for communication, inclusion and personal development, this programme offers you the right qualifications. The close linking of arts and social sciences makes for a practical education that teaches both theory fundamentals and practical skills. A special perk is the option to pursue the degree in a dual mode (academic degree and apprenticeship simultaneously), so you can gain valuable work experience at a social institution while you study and support yourself financially.

Dual degree programme in social work

The dual mode of the Social Work specialisation closely links artistic methods with practical social work. It combines theory, practice and artistic reflection in a structured dual model with strong practical integration and financial support from the cooperating institutions.

Structure and organisation

Dual students complete their studies in cooperation with a social institution. Cooperation agreements with partner institution form the basis of the cooperation between the university and the institution.

  • Tuition fees are covered by the institution
  • Monday to Wednesday: Theoretical and artistic courses at the university
  • On Mondays, courses are offered in hybrid or digital form
  • Thursday and Friday: Practical work at the institution
  • Ten weeks per year are reserved exclusively for vocational practice
  • Internships within the programme:
    2nd semester: 8 ECTS (approx. 200 hours)
    7th semester: 24 ECTS (approx. 600 hours)

The practical periods are credited with ECTS and accompanied by university mentoring.

Integration of theory and practice

In the dual mode of the Social Work specialisation, theory and practice are closely linked, so that the content covered in the seminars is always placed and reflected upon in a practical context. The practice partners are continuously involved throughout the course of the programme, ensuring close cooperation between the university and social institutions. Dual students systematically analyse and evaluate their fields of practice and contribute their findings to the professional discourse in order to deepen the connection between theoretical knowledge and professional application. In addition, the practical aspects are not examined in isolation, but are discussed in joint courses with full-time students, thus promoting interdisciplinary exchange and a comprehensive examination of the challenges of social work.

Recognition and degree

• The specialization leads to a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in social work.
• Successful completion of the program also grants state recognition.
• The bachelor's thesis can be written as either an academic or artistic paper.
